If you listen closely to the squeaking boardwalks of Virginia City you can hear stories of gold, dancing girls, road agents, smoking guns, vigilantes, and Boot Hill. At the peak of Virginia City's gold rush, the town supported a population of more than 10,000 and became Montana's Territorial Capital in 1865. More than $10 million in nuggets, flakes and gold dust were extracted from Alder Creek, which flows through Virginia and Nevada Cities. In today's gold market, that would be worth over 2.5 billion dollars!
