Rodeos are exciting, loud, and full of action. Use these safety tips to help you enjoy the fun while staying safe around big crowds, animals, and busy arenas.

Before You Go

  • Go with an adult. Never go to a rodeo or walk around the grounds by yourself.
  • Wear the right clothes, like closed-toe shoes or boots, comfy pants, a hat, and sunscreen.
  • Pick a meeting spot with your family in case you get separated.

In the Stands

  • Stay behind fences and rails; never climb on gates or lean over the arena.
  • Sit on the bleachers instead of climbing or jumping on them.
  • Listen to the announcer and staff if they ask people to move or stay back.

Near Animals

  • Pet animals only in areas where staff say it's okay, and always with an adult.
  • Never reach through fences or into pens, chutes, or stalls.
  • Wash your hands after touching animals or being near pens.

Kids' Events

  • Wear all safety gear like helmets and vests the way helpers show you.
  • Follow the chute bosses and arena helpers' directions right away.
  • Tell an adult if you feel hurt or too nervous to ride.

Good Rodeo Manners

  • Walk instead of run in crowded areas.
  • Use quieter voices near animals so you don't startle them.
  • Don't feed rodeo animals unless a staff member is guiding the activity.
  • Ask a grown-up if you're not sure whether something is safe.
