  • Born Around 1831: He was born near the Grand River in what is now South Dakota.
  • Leader of the Lakota Nation: Sitting Bull became the head chief of the Lakota Sioux around 1868.
  • Sacred Lands: The Black Hills were very special to the Lakota people, but gold was discovered there in 1874, causing big problems.
  • The Sundance Ritual: Before battle, Sitting Bull led a sacred ceremony where warriors danced and made sacrifices to the Great Spirit.
