Tourism in Montana
Tourism is one of Montana’s largest industries. It brings visitors from across the United States and around the world to enjoy the state’s mountains, rivers, parks, small towns, and friendly communities.
In 2023, Montana welcomed about 12.57 million nonresident visitors. These visitors spent roughly $5.45 billion while they were here. Their spending was spread across food and beverages (about $1.4 billion), lodging (about $1.1 billion), transportation such as fuel and car expenses (about $1.6 billion), shopping (about $600 million), and outfitter or guide services (about $500 million).
Tourism supports jobs for many Montanans. In 2023, visitor spending directly and indirectly supported about 66,550 jobs across the state. Nonresident visitors also generated about $414 million in state and local tax revenue, which helped reduce taxes for Montana households by an estimated $930 per household.
Back in 2010, Montana had about 12.6 million visitors, who spent roughly $3.8 billion. Even though the number of visitors has stayed about the same, the amount each visitor spends has grown over time. That means tourism is even more important to Montana’s economy today.
Tourism in Montana continues to thrive. It supports businesses and workers, brings money into communities, and gives visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty and welcoming spirit that make Montana special.
