As the expedition moved closer to the headwaters of the Missouri River in what is now southwestern Montana, the men were excited and encouraged that Sacagawea began to recognize the country of her childhood and said her Shoshone relatives lived along this river. In the broad valleys of the upper Missouri and Jefferson rivers, Lewis often wrote about the fresh game and wild berries that filled the area, and the men enjoyed the green, well-watered land after so many weeks on open prairie and through rocky canyons. Lewis's big Newfoundland dog, Seaman, sometimes chased geese and other animals along the river, and in this rich habitat the explorers saw many beaver, otter, and even signs of wild horses near their camps.
