The expedition found this region full of wild animals. They saw great herds of buffalo, elk, deer, and antelope, and they passed many beaver, porcupines, geese, ducks, and even a few swans along the river. In this area they also began to meet more grizzly bears and soon learned how strong and dangerous these big "white bears" could be. The men sometimes trapped beaver for food and fur. On May 19, 1805, a wounded beaver bit Lewis's dog Seaman in the hind leg and cut an artery, but after Lewis treated the wound, Seaman recovered. True to his Newfoundland breed, Seaman kept racing along the shore, eager to chase geese, ducks, beaver, and almost anything else that moved.
