14. Clark's Lookout
Updated: March 2, 2026
On August 13, 1805, Captain Clark climbed a high bluff above the Beaverhead River in what is now southwestern Montana, a hill that later took his name. From the top he looked out over the wide Beaverhead Valley, still searching for Sacagawea's Shoshone people. At almost the same time, but out of Clark's sight, Captain Lewis had just made contact with a group of Shoshone warriors and was beginning the talks that would soon bring the expedition and the Shoshone together at a place later called Camp Fortunate.
