Montana is very proud of its colleges and universities, which serve as cultural centers with sports, lectures, art shows, theater, festivals, and community events. The public Montana University System includes more than a dozen campuses across the state, and Montana is also home to private colleges and several tribally controlled colleges that provide higher education close to home for Native communities.
The University of Montana in Missoula, founded in 1893, remains one of the state's flagship public universities. Main Hall, completed in 1898, still stands at the head of the Oval-a central green space at the base of Mount Sentinel-and its clock-tower bells continue to ring out across campus.
