Originally, the Sun River Jail; the jail was built of 2x4's laid flat. The good folks of Sun River no doubt built the jail, c. 1870's, to hold some of the soldiers from Fort Shaw when they came to town and got drunk.

A prisoner in a wooden jail in Fort Benton once tried to escape by setting the building on fire and was allowed to burn up with the building by the enraged townsfolk, and it is said that the story of his demise squelched attempts by other prisoners in wooden jails to try his method.
