Myrna Loy was a famous movie star who started life as a Montana girl named Myrna Williams. She was born on August 2, 1905, in the tiny town of Radersburg, Montana, and spent part of her childhood in Helena.
When Myrna was about 12, she performed a dance on stage at the Marlow Theater in Helena, showing how much she loved to dance and perform. A few years later, her father died during the 1918 flu pandemic, and her mother moved the family to the Los Angeles area in California. There, Myrna went to school, kept studying dance, and began acting in local plays when she was around 15 years old to help her family.
In 1925, she took the stage name "Myrna Loy" and appeared in her first movies. She first acted in silent films and then in "talkies," or movies with sound, and by the 1930s she was one of Hollywood's biggest stars. She appeared in more than 120 films over her long career, including the very popular movie "The Best Years of Our Lives," which won several Academy Awards.
Myrna Loy was known not only for acting but also for helping others. She supported groups such as the Red Cross and the United Nations and spoke out for civil rights and fair treatment of people. Many people admired her for using her fame to try to make the world better.
Myrna Loy died on December 14, 1993, at the age of 88, after a career that lasted more than 50 years. In Helena, Montana, a community arts center called The Myrna Loy shows films, holds performances, and offers classes in her honor, reminding visitors that a world-famous movie star once called Montana home.
