Farm and Ranch Land

Montana's land area consists of 93 million acres of rugged mountains, deep valleys and wide open plains. Montana is the fourth largest state in land area in the country, ranking after Alaska, Texas and California. Montana has 59.7 million acres of land used for farm and ranch production. Farms and ranches make up approximately two-thirds of the state’s total land area. Most of this land is rangeland used for cattle and sheep, while the remainder is used for growing crops: wheat, barley, oats, sugar beets, corn, potatoes, cherries and hay to name a few. Over one-third of Montana’s land is owned by the government, which includes National Forests. Many farmers and ranchers pay a fee in order to use this land for their crop or livestock production.
